Spring is here. It’s time to Marie Kondo your mind.

Just like an overflowing wardrobe or kitchen cupboard, our minds need a good sort through from time to time. Most of us are carrying around piles of beliefs and emotions that no longer serve us and yet we hold on to them like an old sweater that we just can’t let go of. We no longer wear it, and wouldn’t be caught dead in public in it, but we just can’t let it go.

Our minds are bombarded by thousands of messages every day. Our brains need a way to sort through all the visual and mental noise that we are subjected to, and so our brain uses what is called a Reticular Activating System to filter the noise and decide which messages should receive our attention.

In theory this is great! But it is causing problems for millions of people every day as they view life through an outdated filter that they most likely created years ago. Their belief system is built on ideas and beliefs that perhaps even developed as a child, and they have created a life out of these outdated ideas and concepts.

Would you still wear a t-shirt you wore as an 8 year old? I’m assuming it wouldn’t even still fit you. So why are you basing key life decisions on a belief about yourself or the world that was formed years ago. Life has moved on since then, but most of us haven’t taken the time to assess our beliefs and whether they are adapted for the life we really want to lead.

So I have a challenge for you this week. Look at your life. Really look at it. Do you love everything you see? Are there areas of struggle and discontent? You are most likely in need of a good mindset sort through. Set aside some time this weekend to examine your life and decide what you want to see more of and what you want to see less of. Is your mindset inline with the life you want to live? If not, it might be time to sort through the clutter and update the wardrobe of your mind.
